The Fix: Flashing the Field

Restoring lost residual magnetism is done through a process called flashing the field, which reintroduces a small amount of magnetism to the rotor using an external DC source such as a battery or a drill.

This involves live electrical terminals, and doing it wrong can damage the generator's electronics or injure you. Incorrect polarity can actually cancel the remaining magnetism rather than restore it, and the AVR must usually be disconnected first.
