What Size Snow Blower Do I Need?
In This Guide
Deciding what size snow blower do I need comes down to three things: how long your driveway is, whether it is paved or gravel, and how much snow you typically get. Clearing width gets the headlines, but the stage type and engine matter just as much. Buy too small and you are out there for an hour in a storm; buy too big and you have paid for and are storing power you never use. Here is how to size it right.
Start With Surface and Snowfall
Surface decides the type before width even matters. Gravel rules out a single stage machine entirely, because its auger touches the ground and would fling stones. If your drive is gravel, you need a two or three stage.
Snowfall sets the capability. If you rarely see more than 8 inches, a single stage clears it. If a foot or more is common, you need the lifting power of a two stage.
Clearing Width by Driveway
| Driveway | Suggested width | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 cars, paved, light snow | 18 to 22 inches | Single stage |
| 2 to 3 cars, mixed snow | 24 to 26 inches | Two stage |
| Long or wide, deeper snow | 28 inches | Two stage |
| Very long, heavy wet snow | 28 to 30 inches | Two or three stage |
Why Bigger Is Not Always Better
A wider machine clears in fewer passes but is heavier to turn, harder to store, and burns more fuel. On a short driveway a compact machine is genuinely faster because it is easier to maneuver around cars and tight corners.
Do Not Forget Throw Distance and Height
On a wide driveway you have to throw snow far enough to clear the area you already cleared, or you just move it around. Two and three stage machines throw much farther, which matters more as the cleared area grows. Intake height also matters where snow drifts deep against a garage.
Match the Engine, Not Just the Width
A wide auger needs enough engine behind it, or it bogs down in heavy snow. Pairing a large clearing width with an undersized engine gives you a machine that looks capable and stalls in the exact conditions you bought it for. Reputable machines size the two together.
Be wary of a very wide machine at a suspiciously low price. It often means a small engine that cannot drive that width through deep snow.
Rather Have a Real Technician Handle It?
A Wildwood technician comes to your driveway, diagnoses the snow blower on site, and gets it running, usually in about an hour. More than 10,000 repairs completed since 2019, with flat rates quoted before we arrive so there are no surprises. When the snow is falling, you cannot wait around.
