Lawn Mower Battery Voltage and Amps Explained

The numbers on a mower battery look cryptic, volts, amps, CCA, Ah, but each one tells you something useful, and together they let you diagnose a weak battery and buy the right replacement. How Many Volts Is a Lawn Mower Battery?
Two answers, depending on the mower. 12 volt is by far the most common, used in nearly all modern riding mowers, lawn tractors and zero turns. 6 volt appears on some older and compact ride-on models. The voltage is printed on the battery label, and it is the first thing to confirm before charging or replacing, because mixing the two damages the battery. Volts vs Amps vs CCA vs Ah
Four ratings, four different meanings:

For starting a mower, voltage and CCA are what matter most. When replacing, match or exceed the original CCA so the mower cranks as well as it did new.
Healthy Voltage Readings
A multimeter tells you the battery's state of charge and health:

Measure at rest, a few minutes after charging or running, for an accurate reading. For 6 volt batteries, the healthy full reading is about 6.3 to 6.4 volts.
How to Measure Your Battery Voltage
Set the multimeter to DC volts
Select the 20 volt DC range (or the next range above your battery voltage).
Touch the probes to the terminals
Red probe to positive (+), black probe to negative (-). The reading appears immediately.
Read resting voltage
With the engine off and the battery rested, compare against the table above to find its state of charge.
Optional: check cranking voltage
Watch the meter while the engine cranks. A healthy 12 volt battery stays above about 9.6 volts under load; a worn one collapses lower.
Matching a Replacement Battery
To buy the right battery, match four things to your original: the voltage (12V or 6V), the group size (U1 is the common mower size, printed on the battery or in the manual), the terminal position (which side the positive sits, so the cables reach), and the CCA rating (match or exceed it). When Good Voltage Still Will Not Start the Mower
A battery can show a perfect 12.6 volts at rest and still fail under load, which is why the cranking test matters: a worn battery's voltage collapses when the starter pulls on it. But if the battery holds voltage even while cranking and the mower still will not turn over, the battery is fine and the fault lies in the solenoid, starter or a connection, covered in our guide on testing the starter and solenoid.
