Should You Run Premium Gas in Small Engines?
In This Guide
Whether to run premium gas in small engines is one of the most common fuel myths, and it costs owners money for nothing. Premium simply means higher octane, which resists engine knock. Small engines are low compression and do not knock the way a high performance car engine can, so the extra octane does nothing useful. The fuel factor that actually matters is completely different. Here is what the octane really does and what your engine truly needs.
What Octane Actually Is
Octane measures a fuel's resistance to knocking, the premature combustion that can occur under high compression and load. Premium fuel has a higher octane rating to serve high compression performance engines. It is not cleaner or more powerful, it simply resists knock.
Why It Does Nothing for Small Engines
Small engines, the ones in mowers, generators, and snow blowers, run low compression and modest loads, so they never encounter the knock that premium is designed to prevent. Feeding them premium is like buying a stronger lock for a door that was never at risk. You pay more and gain nothing.
Your engine manual almost certainly specifies 87 octane regular. Following it saves money at every fill up with no downside.
What Actually Matters in the Fuel
| Fuel factor | Effect on a small engine |
|---|---|
| Freshness | Critical, stale fuel gums the carburetor |
| Ethanol content | Important, ethanol attracts moisture |
| Octane | No practical effect |
Freshness and ethanol content decide whether your engine starts reliably. Octane does not make that list.
The Fuel That Keeps It Running
Use fresh 87 octane regular unleaded.
Choose ethanol free where available, or add stabilizer to E10.
Use the fuel within a month, or add stabilizer if it will sit.
Never store the machine on untreated fuel over the off season.
One Real Exception
The only fuel that genuinely helps is ethanol free gas for seasonal machines, and that is about ethanol, not octane. If you want to spend a little more on better fuel, spend it on ethanol free regular, not on premium.
Rather Have a Real Technician Handle It?
A Wildwood technician comes to your driveway, diagnoses the machine on site, and gets it running, usually in about an hour. More than 10,000 repairs completed since 2019, with flat rates quoted before we arrive so there are no surprises.
