A small engine hard to start when hot points to a fault that only shows up at temperature, which is why it starts fine cold and frustrates you once warm. The usual culprits are an ignition coil breaking down as it heats, vapor lock where fuel vaporises in the lines, or a rich mix flooding the warm cylinder. Each leaves its own clues. Here is how to tell them apart and get a hot engine firing again.
A Fault That Shows Up Warm
An engine that starts easily cold but fights you hot has a fault that only appears at temperature. That pattern is the key clue, because it points away from the usual cold no start causes and toward a short list of heat related ones. Recognising the pattern is half the diagnosis.
The Ignition Coil
The most common cause is a failing ignition coil. As it heats, a breaking down coil loses its spark, so the engine runs and restarts fine cold but will not fire once warm. If the fault reliably appears with heat and fuel checks out, the coil is the first thing to have tested, and replacing it usually cures it.
A telltale sign of a heat failing coil is a warm engine that starts again fine after it cools for twenty minutes. That cooling and recovering pattern points straight at the coil.
Vapor Lock
Heat can also vaporise fuel in the lines or carburetor, called vapor lock, so the engine is starved of liquid fuel when hot. It is more common in hot weather and around a hot muffler. Letting the engine cool, and making sure heat shields and fuel routing are intact, helps, as does fresh, correct fuel.
A Rich or Flooded Mix

A choke that stays partly closed or a carburetor flooding the warm engine leaves it too rich to fire. Confirm the choke opens fully when warm and the carburetor is not overflowing.
Working the Diagnosis
Start from the pattern: cold starts fine, hot does not. Check spark when hot to catch a failing coil, rule out vapor lock by letting it cool and checking fuel routing, and confirm the choke and carburetor are not flooding it. Most hot start problems fall to one of these, with the coil the most common by far.
