First, Rule Out the Simple Things

Before assuming the worst, confirm the basics, because a real share of no starts are one of these.

1. Is there fresh fuel?

Not fuel from last winter. Old petrol is the number one cause, and we will come back to why.

2. Is the fuel valve open?

Many snow blowers have a fuel shutoff. It must be open.

3. Is the safety key in?

Snow blowers have a removable safety key or ignition key that must be inserted, and often turned on, before it will start.

4. Choke and primer set?

A cold engine needs full choke, and a few presses of the primer bulb if fitted.

Why Stale Fuel Is Almost Always the Cause

Here is the heart of it. A snow blower is a seasonal machine. It works hard for a few winter months, then sits untouched for eight or nine, very often with fuel left in the tank and carburetor.

Over those months, that petrol degrades into a sticky varnish that blocks the fine passages of the carburetor, especially the main jet. Come winter, the engine cranks but cannot get clean fuel, so it will not start. This single pattern is behind most snow blower no starts.

Using the Choke and Primer Correctly

Cold-start technique trips people up. On a cold snow blower engine, set the choke to full. If there is a primer bulb, press it firmly a few times to push fuel into the carburetor. Then start it. Once it fires and runs, gradually move the choke back toward the off position over the next several seconds.

Do not over-prime. Pressing the primer too many times floods the engine. Three or so presses is usually right. If you smell strong raw fuel, you have likely flooded it, so wait a few minutes before trying again with no primer.

Check the Spark Plug

A fouled or worn spark plug is a common no start on a machine that has sat. Remove it and look. A plug wet with fuel means the engine is flooded or not firing, a black sooty plug means it is running rich, and a worn or damaged plug should simply be replaced, since plugs are cheap.

Snow blowers live outdoors in damp, cold conditions, which is hard on plugs, so a fresh plug is a cheap thing to try.

Electric Start Won't Crank?

Many snow blowers have an electric start, often mains-powered through a cord as well as, or instead of, a battery. If nothing happens on electric start, check the extension cord and outlet, confirm any battery is charged, and remember the recoil pull cord is there as a backup. If it starts on the cord but not the button, the fault is the starter or its power, not the engine.

The Real Fix for Most No Starts: The Carburetor

If the fuel is fresh, the valve is open, the key is in, the choke and primer are right, and the plug is good, and it still will not start, the carburetor is blocked with varnish from old fuel.
