How to Test a Lawn Mower Starter and Solenoid

Once you have confirmed the battery is good, a mower that still will not crank has its problem in one of two parts: the solenoid that switches the power, or the starter motor that does the spinning. This guide shows you how to tell them apart by sound first, then confirm with a multimeter, so you replace the right part rather than guessing. First, Rule Out the Battery and Connections
Every starter and solenoid test starts by eliminating the cheap, common causes. Confirm the battery rests at about 12.6 volts and holds up under cranking load, using our voltage guide. Check both battery terminals and the cables to the solenoid and starter are clean and tight, corrosion here mimics a dead starter exactly. And confirm the safety interlocks are satisfied: seat occupied, brake set, blades off. Many no crank calls end right here. Only once the battery and connections are confirmed good do the solenoid and starter come into suspicion.

The noise when you turn the key is the fastest diagnostic:

The single click is the classic solenoid signature, and it is what most owners describe. Confirming it takes a multimeter.
Testing the Solenoid
Locate the solenoid
It is a small cylindrical or boxy relay near the battery or starter, with two large terminals (battery in, starter out) and one or two small terminals (the trigger signal).
Check power in
Set the multimeter to DC volts. Probe the large input terminal (from the battery) against ground. You should read full battery voltage, about 12.6 volts.
Check power out while cranking
With probes on the large output terminal (to the starter) and ground, have someone turn the key. A good solenoid passes battery voltage through to this terminal. No voltage out while there is voltage in and a trigger signal present means the solenoid has failed.
Confirm the trigger signal
Check the small terminal gets voltage when the key is turned. If the trigger arrives but the solenoid does not pass power through, replace the solenoid.
Testing the Starter Motor
If the solenoid passes power through but the starter still will not spin, the starter motor is the suspect. Two checks:
- Voltage at the starter: with the multimeter on the starter's main terminal to ground, have someone crank. If full battery voltage reaches the starter but it does not turn, the motor is bad.
- Direct bench or jumper test: carefully applying battery power directly to the starter (a known technique, with the starter secured) shows whether it spins at all. A starter that will not spin with direct power has failed internally, common causes are worn brushes or a seized armature.
A starter that spins but does not engage the engine, often with a grinding or whirring sound, points instead at the starter drive gear or the flywheel ring gear it meshes with.
Common Failures and What They Mean
Putting the symptoms together:
- Single click, no crank, good battery: failed solenoid, the most common outcome.
- Voltage reaches starter, no spin: failed starter motor (brushes or armature).
- Grinding or whirring, no crank: starter drive gear or flywheel ring gear damage.
- Slow drag with a good battery: a worn starter pulling excess current.
- Intermittent, works sometimes: often a connection or a solenoid on its way out.

When It Is Not the Starting System at All
