What You Can Jump From

A riding mower runs a 12 volt battery, so three donors work: a car (engine off), another mower (engine off), or a portable lithium jump pack (the safest, since it gives a controlled boost). The rule that applies to all three, and especially the car: the donor engine stays off. A running car alternator pushes high current that a small mower battery and its electronics cannot safely absorb. With the donor off you simply share stored charge. Step by Step: Jump Starting

Access the battery and turn the donor off

Tilt the seat or open the hood to reach the riding mower battery. Position the donor close, then switch its engine completely off.

Red to both positives

Clamp one red end to the mower battery positive (+), the other red end to the donor positive (+).

Black to the donor negative

Clamp one black end to the donor battery negative (-).

Black to the mower frame

Clamp the final black end to clean, unpainted metal on the mower frame, away from the battery. This keeps any spark clear of battery gases.

Start the mower

Sit on the seat, set the brake, and turn the key. The mower should crank and fire on the borrowed charge.

Remove cables in reverse

With the mower running, remove the frame ground first, then the donor negative, then both positives.
