Putting a thrown belt back on is a ten minute annoyance. Putting it back on for the fourth Saturday in a row is a diagnosis, and the diagnosis is never just the belt. Our technicians see this complaint constantly, often after a customer has already installed a brand new belt that came off in its first hour. Coming Off vs Breaking: Two Different Problems
Start by naming your problem precisely, because the cause lists barely overlap. A belt that jumps off intact has a tracking or tension problem: something is letting it wander off its pulleys. A belt that snaps or shreds has a load or friction problem: something is working it far beyond its rating. A belt that comes off, gets reinstalled, and then shreds soon after usually picked up a twist or rolled edge during its first escape, which is why a belt that has thrown more than once should be inspected closely and often simply replaced once the root cause is fixed.
Cause 1: Worn Idler Pulleys and Weak Tensioner Springs
Idler pulleys are the spring loaded wheels that hold tension on the belt, and they are the most common root cause we find behind repeat throws. Their sealed bearings dry out with age, the pulley develops wobble or seizes, and a wobbling idler steers the belt right off its path. The tensioner spring matters just as much: a stretched or broken spring cannot hold working tension, and a slack belt flaps, catches and escapes, especially in turns or on slopes.
Test them with the engine off, key out and spark wire pulled: spin each pulley by hand and feel for grinding or play, and check that every tension spring is intact and seated in an unworn hole. Most deck belts have no manual tension adjustment at all, the spring IS the tension, so a tired spring means replacement, not adjustment. Cause 2: Debris Packed in the Pulley Grooves
The V shape of the belt and the V groove of the pulley are a matched pair, and the belt stays on because it rides deep in that groove. Grass clippings, dirt and twigs compact into the groove like a packed snowball, and a groove with debris in its bottom effectively gets shallower, lifting the belt until it can climb out under load. Under deck covers and around the engine pulley, where nobody looks, is exactly where it builds.
The fix costs nothing: remove the belt covers and clean every groove down to bare metal, including the underside guards where clumps wedge against the belt. Make it part of the end of season cleanup, and avoid hosing the deck area, since water washes debris into bearings and rusts grooves; scrape and brush instead.
Cause 3: A Stretched or Worn Belt (Yes, They Stretch)
Do lawn mower belts stretch? They do, and it answers the most confusing version of this problem: a belt that looks perfect but will not stay on. Belts elongate gradually as their tension cords fatigue, and they also wear thinner at the sides, sitting deeper and looser in the grooves. The tensioner spring compensates up to a point, then runs out of travel, and the now slack belt starts escaping.
Worn spots have a second effect: the thin sections create slack pulses each revolution that flick the belt around. There is no fixing a stretched belt. Replace it with an OEM or kevlar reinforced equivalent, matched by part number rather than by measuring the old, stretched belt, which is precisely how people end up ordering a belt one size too long.
Cause 4: Bent Belt Guides, Misaligned and Damaged Pulleys
Belt guides (also called keepers) are the small rods or brackets that hover a few millimeters from each pulley to stop the belt from climbing out. They get bent during previous belt failures, careless deck removal, or impacts, and a bent guide either presses on the belt and wears it or leaves a gap big enough to defeat its purpose. Inspect each guide for the small, even clearance your manual specifies.
Pulley alignment and condition come last on the inspection but matter most when present: a bent spindle shaft after a blade strike, a loose pulley nut or a pulley with a chipped flange will throw any belt no matter how new. Sight along the belt runs for pulleys that sit tilted relative to the others, and check spindles for wobble while you have your hands on them.
When the Belt Keeps Breaking Instead
Snapping belts have their own ranked list. A seized or stiff pulley is the top cause, forcing the belt to drag across a non turning wheel until friction burns through it; the glazed, shiny patch on the failed belt gives it away. Shock loads are next: every blade strike on a root or stone whips through the belt, and repeated hits break cords one by one until the belt lets go. Misrouted belts after a deck removal rub crossways on guides or frame edges and saw themselves apart, so always photograph the routing before removing any belt. Finally, oil contamination from an engine leak swells and softens rubber until it delaminates; fix the leak or the new belt inherits the problem.
How Tight Should a Mower Deck Belt Be?
The standard for a spring tensioned deck belt is simple: with the blades engaged, the belt should deflect roughly half an inch under firm thumb pressure midway along its longest run. Looser than an inch of travel and it will slip and throw; guitar string tight and it will eat idler bearings and spindles. On most residential decks you do not set this manually, the spring does, which turns the question around: if your tension is wrong, a component is worn, usually the spring or the belt, and that component is the fix.
