Half the confusion about mower belts is pure vocabulary. Between drive belts, deck belts, blade belts, PTO belts, motion drive belts and ground drive belts, manufacturers and parts catalogs use six names for what is usually just two physical belts. The Two Belt System on a Riding Mower
Open up almost any riding mower or lawn tractor and you will find exactly two belts doing all the work. One connects the engine to the transmission so the wheels turn. The other connects the engine to the cutting deck so the blades spin. Everything else you have heard, blade belt, PTO belt, motion belt, ground drive belt, is an alias for one of those two. A few commercial and zero turn machines add a third belt, typically a separate pump belt for the hydrostatic drives, but two is the rule for residential equipment.
What the Drive Belt Does
The drive belt is the propulsion belt. It loops from the crankshaft pulley under the engine down to the input pulley on the transmission or transaxle, and when it spins, the mower moves. Press the pedal or move the lever and a tensioner tightens this belt to transfer power, whether your machine has a gear transmission or a hydrostatic drive.
Its aliases are ground drive belt, motion drive belt, transmission belt and traction belt. Parts catalogs use these interchangeably, which is the single biggest source of wrong belt orders we see. The drive belt usually follows a shorter, more direct route than the deck belt and is built heavier, because moving a 500 pound machine plus rider takes more sustained force than spinning blades.

What the Deck Belt (Blade Belt) Does
The deck belt is the cutting belt. It runs from the engine pulley out to the mower deck, where it snakes around the blade spindle pulleys and one or more spring loaded idler pulleys. Engage the blades and this belt transfers engine power to the spindles, spinning the blades at cutting speed.
Its aliases are blade belt, mower belt, cutting belt and deck drive belt. Because it wraps multiple spindles and idlers, the deck belt follows a longer and more complicated path than the drive belt, lives lower where grass debris collects, and takes shock loads every time a blade strikes a stick or stone. That combination makes it the belt that fails more often on most machines.
When the deck belt fails, the opposite of a drive belt failure happens: the mower drives around fine, but the blades will not spin or stop under load and the mower stops cutting.
What a PTO Belt Is
PTO stands for power take off, the system that lets you switch blade power on and off. On a riding mower, the PTO is either an electric clutch on the crankshaft or a mechanical idler arrangement controlled by your blade lever. The PTO belt is simply whichever belt that system engages, and on nearly all residential riding mowers, that is the deck belt.
So when a parts diagram lists a PTO belt for your tractor, it is in most cases the same part as the deck belt. The term matters more on larger garden tractors and commercial machines, where a dedicated PTO belt can drive attachments like snow blowers and tillers in addition to the deck.
Is the Deck Belt and Drive Belt the Same? Quick Comparison
No. They are two different belts in two different places doing two different jobs, and they are almost never the same length or rating. Here is the full comparison:

How to Identify Which Belt You Need
Three reliable ways, in order of preference:
- Symptom first. Mower will not move but blades work: drive belt. Blades will not spin but mower drives: deck belt. This alone answers it in most cases.
- Model and serial lookup. Find the model plate (under the seat on most riders) and use the manufacturer parts site to pull the exact belt numbers for your machine. This is the only method that guarantees correct length and profile.
- Visual trace. Follow the suspect belt with the engine off and key out. The belt heading down to the transaxle is the drive belt, the one heading out to the deck is the deck belt.

Belt Life, Quality and Replacement Costs
A quality belt on a well maintained mower commonly lasts several seasons, while a cheap unbranded belt can be measured in months. OEM and kevlar reinforced belts cost more upfront, typically $20 to $80 for residential machines, and earn it back in lifespan, since aramid cords resist the stretching and shock damage that kill bargain belts.
On labor, deck belt replacement on most riders is a reasonable DIY job, while drive belts often require removing the deck and working around the frame, which is where many owners call us.
